I am Barbara
Hallman, of Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. I have lived
in this area all of my life, and in fact, I am a four generation native. I
have been pressing flowers going on a decade now, after seeing pressed
flower art displayed at a local garden park, and thinking, wow, I could do
that! That inspiration led to a passion for learning all I could about
pressing botanicals and then recreating nature through artwork using the
pressed materials. I continue to refine my techniques and, through the
Guild, continue to learn about this wonderful, intriguing art form. I sell
my cards at a local florist shop, work on commissions for friends, and
donate work to my church for sale, and all of my friends are recipients of
pressed flower works--cards, pictures, bookmarks, and other items. I love
the idea of preserving nature's beauty and honoring the gifts nature has
given us.
Ron and I were married in 2005, and we live with a big fluffy black and white cat, Lexy, who has done his fair share of composing with my flowers. In 2007, I retired after almost 38 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the domestic nutrition assistance programs...child nutrition, Food Stamps, etc, but continue to do contract work for them and stay well connected through Ron, who still works there. We have a large family that includes 3 elderly people as well as 5 little grandchildren all needing attention and care, so our lives are blessed with love and is always full of activity. In addition to my passion for pressing flowers and creating artworks from them, I am very active in my church, and one of my church missions is editor of and photographer for our monthly newsletter. I love to ski, cook, garden, hike, and go birding .We travel extensively almost every month and annually we take at least one non-domestic trip to the tropical islands, Europe, and/or Canada. |
